I’m always looking for different ideas and angles for my photography, unfortunately though someone’s already invented the Wheel. So I try to think out of the box, plan the image I want and how to achieve it. On this particular trip to London my goals were Big Ben, Tower Bridge, The Shard and The Girl and the Dolphin… everything else was a bonus.
As previously mentioned before any shoot I always plan my goals, sunset time and vantage point, equipment preparation, cleaning cameras, charging batteries, spare batteries, flash guns, stands, remote triggers, cable releases, filters, correct tripod, monopod, torches….. yes torches! If you’ve ever tried to set up a camera tripod and a camera release cord plus flashes and triggers in the dark you’ll understand why torches are important. The second torch is for security…. your security, its extremely unnerving when on your own and you’ve got £1000’s worth of equipment set up in the street and there’s someone lurking in the shadows, a bright light to identify them is a deterrent.
So now everything is packed and I’m ready to go, but there are times when you have to trust an expert…. yes the good old London cabbie (Or NOT), it seemed quite simple, cab from the London Eye to the Shard this would give me enough time to set up near the South Tower of Tower Bridge to get the sunset over the Thames. Unfortunately it all went wrong when the cab took a left turn and started over the river and all I heard was this’ll be quicker mate just before we came to a halt…. then out came the knowledge in the form of an A to Z and a large street map. Needless to say I had bail out of the cab and as for the sunset….. NO Chance!
As for the night photography, I had great fun taking them, I hope you agree it was worth it.
P.S. as for the monopod, always carry one; they have multiple uses:-
1. Quick camera support.
2. Walking stick.
3. Useful for keeping unwanted interest at bay.
